Fake Bank Fraud Alert Text Followed by a Phone Call: Full Debit Card Number and PIN Scam

This scam is especially dangerous because it feels like the bank is trying to protect you. The scam starts with a text message, then quickly turns into a phone call.

Helpful next step: If something feels suspicious, stop before you click, call back using a number you know is real, and review the Free Scam Checklist.

A customer-reported scam pattern

A customer received a text message that looked like a fraud alert from their bank. The message made it seem like there might be suspicious activity on the account.

Soon after, the customer received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the bank. The caller said they were calling to verify the fraud alert and protect the account.

The caller asked for the customer’s full debit card number and PIN “to verify” the account. After the customer provided the information, money was transferred out of the bank account.

Warning signs to watch for

  • The text or call was unexpected.
  • The caller created urgency and said the account needed to be protected right away.
  • The caller asked for the full debit card number.
  • The caller asked for the PIN.
  • The customer was not told to hang up and call the official bank number.

What to do before you respond

  1. Do not give your full debit card number or PIN to someone who calls you.
  2. Hang up, even if the caller ID looks like your bank.
  3. Call the number on the back of your card or from your bank’s official website.
  4. Ask the bank to check for fraud, lock the card, and review recent transfers.
  5. Read Bank Fraud Alert Phone Scam and Fake Delivery Texts and Bank Alerts for related warning signs.

The simple rule to remember

If a message, call, website, letter, or ad makes you feel rushed, scared, excited, or pressured, slow down. Scammers want you to act before you verify. A real organization should allow you to hang up, close the message, and contact them through a trusted number or website.
