Smishing education for real-world SMS scams
SMS scams (also called smishing) are phishing attacks delivered through text messages. They’re effective because people move faster on mobile — a text feels personal, the screen is smaller, and links are harder to inspect. Most smishing messages pretend to be something routine: a delivery issue, a bank alert, a password reset, an unpaid toll, or a “refund” waiting for you. The scam relies on urgency and convenience, pushing you to tap a link or call a number before you verify whether it’s legitimate.
A common pattern is a fake login page that looks like a real bank or service. If you enter your username and password, the attacker can take over accounts, drain funds, or reuse those credentials across other sites. Some smishing scams go after payment info directly (“pay a small fee to release your package”), while others try to collect one-time passcodes by claiming they need to “confirm your identity.” The safest habit is simple: don’t use the link in the text. Instead, open the official app, type the website manually, or call a trusted phone number from your bank card or the company’s official website. That one change prevents most smishing-based account theft.
